The back and sides are absolutely beautiful white oak. Ca 1910- 1920 Washburn parlor guitar, 1897 style, probably built by Lyon & Healy for Washburn, spectacular tree of life mother of. I added an ebony ring around the sound hole with spit herringbone. This one has no cracks in the wood but it does need a neck. Either way everything sounds cool on wood that is over 100 years old. The heel was very fat and lacked a delicate curve so I took it down also. This is a great project guitar for the budding luthier, or an amazing first position strummer, or put it in an open tuning with a slide and sound like youve actually lived a life of hardship and blues. He said hes never heard a parlor like that before and it was the most amazing sound hes heard, plugged in, including the higher end dreads. In fact, the company claimed to be the largest manufacturer and importer of musical instruments in the world. The neck was entirely too thick so I shaved it down and gave it a little more pronounced "V" shape. He said he went to see Ian Hunter, from Jethro Tull, at one of our local auditoriums, and that he was playing an old Lyon and Healy Parlor guitar from the late 1800s/early 1900s. Many of the glue joints were loosened as well. Because of an unfortunate circumstance, the top of this guitar was crushed. Steve Smith of Cumberland Acoustics commissioned me to restore his Lyon Healy parlor guitar.

There are no identifying marks on the this instrument, so we are identifying it as a Lyon & Healy Washburn and dating this to the 1920’s based on other guitars known to have been built by them at the time.Hey guys! This Lyon & Healy Washburn Oak – interesting little guitar plays well, and has a warm tone with clear trebles. It’s relatively heavy and hard to work with in the context of bending sides. Oak is a common material for many purposes, but it is unusual to find it on the back and sides of a guitar. The heavily V shaped neck with slotted peghead is likely Poplar, while the fingerboard is a dyed, hard and tight grained wood like Maple. It features a ladder-braced Spruce top and Oak for the sides and back. This Lyon & Healy Washburn Oak parlor guitar, built in Chicago in the 1920s, is an example of the instruments available at that time. Around the start of the twentieth century, Lyon & Healy were one of the larger musical instrument builders in the USA, with Washburn being one of their brands.
